“Changmin hyung! Your phone is ringing!”

Changmin stopped his practice for the Japan tour and got the phone from his staff. He had just returned to the studio after filming Korean variety shows, and was using the extra time to go through all the dances again before he returned to Japan the next day. It was 4pm, and he wondered who could be calling.

Breathing in short breaths while wiping his sweat with a towel, he answered.

“Hello?”

“Hello Changmin sshi. This is Agent Six Zero Zero Two. Agent Six Zero Zero Two requests your presence for a coffee break and supper. Target Duckbutt might be present. Leader-sshi is more than welcome to join. The Alien isn’t free so he won’t be present.”

“Wait what?” Changmin replied, bewildered, his body drained. His mind was still half on the dance routine, his heart still beating to the rhythm of the music. Who the hell was this agent person?

“Yah it’s me! Yoochunnie! Your Yoochunnie hyung! Don’t you remember?” A slightly annoyed voice replied, with an air of disbelief.

“Ahh.” Changmin replied as he remembered what 6002 is. 6002, Yoochunnie. Changmin remembered his hyung’s glee when he proudly announced his ingenious invention over his numerical name. At that time, Changmin simply scorned and carried on with his rice and melted cheese, expression darkened. What’s so great about having a number for a name anyway? It’s not like he, Changmin, would want such a special thing too. No, not at all.

Remembering back, and the taste of that melted cheese with it, Changmin smiled. “Well isn’t this sudden? I might have something on you know-“

“Well, fine then,” huffed Yoochun, “If you don’t miss your hyung I guess-“

“Okay okay,” laughed Changmin. Well, I guess I could go out for a few hours for a break. Supper is an important meal not to be skipped. “I got it. Usual place in 1 hour?”

“Haiiiiiiiii~” Came the gleeful reply.

——-

As Changmin approached the cafe in his car, he smiled at how things still remained unchanged over the years. This cafe remained their favourite spot to chill, being located in a secluded, exclusive area. They were well acquainted with the owners of the cafe too; This was the one place where celebrities can go to without having to deal with sasaengs, since only celebrities were allowed in. as TVXQ’s fame climbed, the cafe became one of the remaining few places they could go to relax after a hard day of practice without fear of sasaengs popping in screaming maniacally at them.

As Changmin pulled up outside the nicely lit cafe, a dark figure approached him. The figure pulled back his hoodie to reveal a smiling Chunface, beaming at his long time partner in crime. Changmin grinned back. He got out and pulled his hyung into a hug, glad to be able to see him physically for once, and not through the internet or newspapers. With a sense of nostalgia, Changmin thought back to those days he took for granted, those days when being able to physically interact with his hyungs meant nothing at all. How he wished he cherished those days more.

“I have located Target Duckbutt, Agent Ramen. All signs show we are ready to ambush.” Yoochun nodded towards another figure sitting in the cafe flipping through the menu. Changmin chuckled; Only Junsu would wear sunglasses indoors even when there weren’t any fans around.

Yoochun hooked his arm around his maknae and directed them into the cafe.

“JUNSU-YAH!! LONG TIME NO SEEEEE!”

Yoochun called happily to the figure.

“OH!” Junsu stood up, surprised and shocked.

“CHANGMIN AHHH!!! I MISSED YOU!!!” Junsu ran towards Changmin, pushing Yoochun away as he engulfed his maknae in a tight hug. It has really been too long.

“What are you doing here? Where’s Yunho?” Junsu asked, leading Changmin to the seat next to him. Yoochun was still pretty much ignored.

“He’s in Japan. I have to return to Japan tomorrow.” Changmin took the menu out of his hyung’s hands and flipped through it. He glanced at Junsu over the menu and commented, “You know, you’re the only one here with sunglasses on. And why are you still wearing your coat?”

Yoochun sniggered, “Guess he thinks there are paparazzi here to take pictures of him.” He took out his phone, “Come Junsu, show your charisma and pretend I’m a stalker.”

Junsu lifted one of his eyebrows as he took his shades off, evidently thinking it was a charismatic look.

“Nono you have to pretend you don’t know people are taking pictures of you!” Yoochun insisted as he focused his camera on his friend. Been a long time since there were ugly photos of Junsu in his phone. He needs to update his collection more.

Junsu rolled his eyes and took the menu back from Changmin, flipping it in what he thought was a charismatic way.

“Ahhh got it!” Yoochun said, satisfied.

“Seriously though, aren’t you feeling hot in here? Take your coat off.” Changmin commanded.

Junsu gave a huge sigh and took it off. Well, it’s not everyday he gets to be bossed around by his members like they used to. Best to cherish this and go along with this while he still can.

“Anyway, how are things, hyung?” Changmin asked after they’ve all ordered. Changmin hasn’t heard anything much about his hyungs ever since he became so much busier with his variety show and the Japan tour.

Junsu exchanged a look with Yoochun.

“Did you hear about July 3?” Yoochun asked, settling down into the seat opposite Junsu.

“No? What about it?” asked Changmin, curious.

“We’re both on the setlist for MCountdown in Indonesia.” Junsu grinned.

“Wait, who’s we? You mean..” Changmin dared not believe that this day has finally come. Performing on the same show? Was this possible?

Changmin tried not to think how ridiculous this question would have been back then. Performing on the same show used to be a given, not a question.

“Yeah.” Yoochun nodded. “TVXQ, and JYJ.” Yoochun ignored how weird it was that he was no longer associated with TVXQ. He was happy for Yunho and Changmin now. Seeing them perform under their former name hurt in the beginning, but now, he feels proud to see the strength in his hyung and maknae to carry on without them. They had made their choice, and so had they. Just because the choices were different doesn’t mean they’re no longer brothers.

“Really?” Changmin said, his voice softened as he searched the eyes of his hyungs, not daring to believe that what he’d wish so much for during these 3 years would come true.

Junsu nodded. “Unless of course, something ‘happens’ as usual. And one of us gets taken off the list..”

Changmin lets the words sink in. This means..

This means he can hit Jaejoong hyung again.

“Where’s Jaejoong hyung?”

Yoochun’s eyes glinted as he guessed what Changmin was thinking about.

“He’s sleeping. I tried calling him but I think he switched his phone off.” Yoochun checked his phone again. Nope, no one called back yet.

“We should make him jealous. Show him what he missed.” Junsu grinned as he took out his phone.

“Changmin ah, take a charismatic selca for me.” Junsu commanded as he put his shades back on. Junsu felt sad they couldn’t take group shots as freely as they used to. But hopefully, this little trick of using the reflection on his shades to show Changmin’s presence is enough to rile Jaejoong hyung up.

Changmin realised what Junsu was trying to do and rolled his eyes, chuckling. Oh how he’d miss his Jun-chan.

“Okay, 1, 2, 3!”

“Ooh nice.” Junsu said as he took his phone back.

“You need to update your twitter hyung. It’s been weeks!”

“Changmin you stalk my twitter?” Junsu asked, delighted.

Changmin suddenly became very interested in Yoochun’s stirring of his coffee.

“Okay okay, was gonna send this straight to Jaejoong hyung but I guess I’ll tweet it.”

“It’s been a while since I have watched a musical^^ hehe Jesus of Christ! Emotional!! A shot at the coffee shop because it’s been a while since I have came out! Heh Is everyone doing well?”

image

After an hour of teasing and bantering, Yoochun suddenly exclaimed, “Oh! We need to update Line too, Jaejoong hyung updated it yesterday so it’s our turn.” Yoochun opened the app and sent the picture he took of Junsu earlier;

image

And so, hours flew by happily, undisturbed. Changmin wished Yunho hyung and Jaejoong hyung were here with them. That would make this perfect if they were.

Eyeing Yoochun’s phone, Changmin asked, “Can I type on that Line thing? No one will know, I’ll just pretend to be the staff.”

“Yeah sure, why not.” Yoochun shrugged as he passed his phone to Changmin.

“It was nice to meet Junsu who was drinking coffee, and enjoyable to listen to the chattering of him and Yoochun who suddenly came like a lightning and has not met Junsu for a while. What about Jaejoong hyung? He was napping soundly. Therefore, it was a bolt of out the blue chat with a bit of regrets. As expected, they are the said JYJ….!!!”

Changmin added “(From Y and J)”, as his small way of somehow adding Yunho and Jaejoong into this precious meetup.

Yoochun grinned as he read it, “That’s very clever Changmin. Yoochun and Junsu, Yunho and Jaejoong. Guess you’re still forever alone eh?”

Junsu laughed and earned a punch on the arm in return. The feelings of being left out in the couple pairings back in those days still hurt a little. Yoochun chuckled as he watched Changmin sulk, knowing that those memories of being paired up with a non-human were flashing through his maknae’s mind right now.

“Changmin ah, you should wear Junsu’s shades tomorrow at the airport! It’ll be like a couple thing!” Yoochun placed the shades on Changmin. “Wow I forgot how big your head was. They look smaller on you. Well, still looking good! Wear this tomorrow okay!”

Changmin looked at himself using the front camera of his phone and felt excited. He grinned at Yoochun, “Okay, thanks hyung!” Finally, he got to do what his hyungs used to do in the name of fanservice! He wonders if the fans will even suspect.

——-

The next day, he wondered why he agreed to such a corny thing and tried to keep his head down so no one could tell that he was wearing, of all people, Junchan’s shades. Because being caught wearing that idiot’s shades would not do at all. He was glad he was paired up with food after all.

the Magic of Soju

”..자유롭게 하늘을 날아가도 even if we fly high up into the sky,

  freely, don’t be scared.
우리 앞에 펼쳐질 세상이
the world unraveling in front of us

-Magic Castle

——-

‘Why can’t you sing Magic Castle on TV, Yoochun? Sure, your group had remade the song before but so what? Yoochun, it’s fine. Don’t worry.”

“You sure this is a good idea, PD-nim?”

“I don’t see a problem. Look, Yoochun, you were, after all, part of the five that sang it. There is nothing wrong with singing it again.”

You were, after all, part of the five that sang it. There is nothing wrong with singing it again.

And so, Yoochun blocked out his worries and sang the song they had sung all those years ago, albeit in a really horrible, off-pitch way. All for the drama.

And ended up being nominated for an MBC Drama award for it.

He couldn’t do anything but laugh in embarrassment when the nomination clip came up. He was shocked, as a singer, at how horrible he sounded, now that he had another listen. He was even more shocked that even if he sang in a horrible way he actually still got nominated for it. It didn’t help that Jaejoong was beside him smirking. Yoochun could only hope his newer fans knew that he debuted as a singer of TVXQ, and not as an actor that couldn’t sing to save himself.

When the MC came over to his table to ask him to sing as a singer, Yoochun felt a huge sense of relief. His heart lightened considerably now that he had the chance to denounce that image of tone-deaf Yoochun. Hopefully, he redeemed himself by singing properly as the singer Park Yoochun. He must remember to thank the MC for giving him the chance to prove to the world that he can, in fact, sing. Even then, his horrible singing still echoed in his head. And what it meant now that he was actually nominated for an award because of it…

Later, when the awards ceremony was over, after greeting and saying goodbye to the sunbaes, Jaejoong found Yoochun in the passenger seat of his car, with his head on his arms, resting on the dashboard in turmoil.

“even if we fly high up.. “  Yoochun’s muffled voice sang sadly. Jaejoong chuckled as he buckled himself in and started the engine.

“Hyung.”

“Mmm?”

“I am a good singer right?”

Jaejoong chuckled again, “Yes, Yoochun, you’re a very, very good singer. Come on, let’s get some alcohol and celebrate at my place, okay? Cheer up.”

Chuckling at Yoochun’s sad sigh, Jaejoong started the car and drove them home.

——-

“I think we might have gotten a bit too much alcohol, Yoochun ah.” Jaejoong commented apprehensively as he surveyed Yoochun’s fully loaded arms.

Yoochun merely looked on grimly, his expression grave. He needed it, if what he predicted to happen later was to really happen.

With a sigh, Jaejoong paid with his card, not wanting to look at the price that amount of alcohol cost. “It’s just acting, why are you so bothered..” Jaejoong muttered.

Half an hour later in the car filled with brooding silence back to Jaejoong’s place, Jaejoong finally voiced out, “Yah, that singing! It just shows how good of an actor you are! Why are you so bothered by it?”

Yoochun merely remained silent.

Jaejoong shook his head and decided to simply concentrate on parking his car. When he got out, three hooded figures emerged from the shadows towards them. Jaejoong’s heart chilled for a second; Sasaengs again? Then one of them pulled his hood back, revealing a set of uneven smiling eyes.

“Changmin ah! Yunho! Junsu! What are you guys doing here?” Jaejoong exclaimed, his mood lifted. He opened his arms for a hug, but his maknae slipped past him and went straight for Yoochun.

“Hyung.” Changmin had a gleeful expression as he waited by the now opened door of Jaejoong’s car.

“I know.” Yoochun replied, sighing in resignation.

“Good. We shall begin when we enter the apartment.” Yoochun felt a chill down his spine as he caught that evil glint in Changmin’s eye.

“What’s going on?” Jaejoong asked, confused. Something was up between his dongsaengs and he didn’t like that he was clueless about it.

“Oh, you’ll know when we go up.” Changmin said airily, helping his hyung with the alcohol bottles. His hyung sure came well prepared.

Jaejoong looked at Yunho and Junsu questioningly, and merely got the same looks back. It seems this is something strictly between Yoochun and Changmin. Oh wells, at least we’re all here together.

“Anyway, I’m really happy you guys came!” Jaejoong said brightly, as he hooked an arm around the shoulders of Junsu and Yunho, leading them to the lift.

“Yeah, me too.” Yunho laughed. “Changmin suddenly arranged this after watching the awards show.” Yunho watched his maknae from the corner of his eye. Changmin was whispering gleefully to a now glum Yoochun. What on earth was going on?

——-

“Changmin ah, put those on that table over there.” Jaejoong instructed as he went to switch the lights on. As he turned, he caught Yunho staring disbelieving at his horse stand.

“Nice, isn’t it?” Jaejoong asked, excitedly.

“Y-yeah.” Yunho wonders how it was possible for his best friend to become anymore weirder than he already was.

As they settled down on the sofa at the table in front of the TV, Junsu piped up.

“So.”

“Yoochun ah, bring me a drink.” Yunho, Jaejoong and Junsu started in surprise as they realised the voice was actually Changmin’s. Yoochun grimaced and got up.

“Uh hem.” Changmin cleared his throat, his face grinning widely.

“Yes Changmin hyung.” Yoochun meekly replied, trying not to cringe. He needs to get that alcohol in his system, now.

“Nono, where’s the -nim? We agreed on that.” Changmin smirked, stretching himself out on the sofa.

“Yes, Changmin hyung NIM.” Yoochun grimaced again, as he poured out alcohol. Bear with it, Yoochun ah. You’ve endured almost a decade under SME. You can deal with this.

Changmin sniggered as he took the glass of alcohol from his hyung. Or rather, his servant for the day.

Yunho asked, “Why are you two like this?” He knew Changmin could be rude but this was quite out of character.

“We made a bet.” Changmin laughed happily, “I was saying how Yoochun’s horrible singing of Magic Castle was so good in the drama, he’d get nominated for it. But he thought otherwise. So we bet, loser has to be the servant of the winner for a day!”

Junsu burst out laughing, “Servant Yoochun! As the hyung of Changmin, I should be served too!”

“And me!” Jaejoong added, grinning as he ruffled his soulmate’s hair. Yoochun looked pitifully at Yunho. “Don’t worry,” Yunho said kindly, “on account of our ex roommate status, I’ll be nice to you.”

And so, for the rest of the night, Yoochun was forced to call everyone “hyung-nim” and to do whatever they wanted.

All because he got nominated for terrible singing.

——-

Several empty bottles of soju and orange juice for Junsu (which Changmin spiked but Junsu didn’t realise) later, they all found themselves slumped on the floor.

“Hey let’s draw on Yoochun’s face!” Changmin suggested, giggling, his uneven eyes even more uneven than before.

“Yah, yah, have you gone crazy?” Yoochun backs away into the corner as he saw his brothers’ faces lit up. “Yah Changmin, I won’t buy food-”

“Shut up servant!” Changmin pointed drunkenly with his half empty soju bottle. He lost count how many he’s finished. The other three rolled on the floor laughing.

“Yah, come on. You won an award tonight! Be a good sport! We’ll do it like make up!” Jaejoong added encouragingly, getting up to get his make up and almost falling over in the process.

“L-liner, liner! That’s the most important Jaejoongie.” Yunho hiccuped, his face in a drunken grin.

Jaejoong stumbled back from his bedroom, his hand holding a fistful of brushes, powders and eyeliners.

“Don’t worry Yoochun, I’m an expert on it by now!” Junsu said enthusiastically. He took a foundation brush and started poking at an already unscrewed lipstick. Junsu soon started laughing to himself while stabbing the lipstick. This was fun.

“Hyung, let’s hold him down!” Changmin punched Yunho’s arm. It did not hurt as much as it should, Yunho noted in a detached manner, and he attributed that to the alcohol. No pain, that was nice.

Yunho and Changmin got up and knelt behind the cross-legged sitting Yoochun, holding his arms behind his back.

“Yah, why are you guys like this, seriously!” Yoochun whined as he tried to break free.

“Ja, first! BB Cream!” Jaejoong squirted a horrendous amount onto his palm. “Oops, this might be too much.” Not knowing what to do as he stared at the huge blob of liquid on his palm, Jaejoong decided to simply slap his palm across Yoochun’s face. “There!”

Yoochun merely slumped in resignation, knowing he was fighting a losing battle. Jaejoong started massaging the BB Cream into his cheeks.”Ah, that’s better!” Jaejoong said in satisfaction, taking another gulp from his soju bottle.

“Hyung, you forgot his forehead.” Changmin pointed out, looking at Yoochun really close up. He could see the acne scars from where he was. Changmin suddenly remembered the Makeup noonas back in the day, always commenting on his hyung’s skin. Why didn’t you take care of your face Yoochun ah? Tsk tsk they’re not smooth anymore. Changmin remembers shooting back when he finally couldn’t take it, Did he ask for it? That shut the noonas up, though from then on he ended up being one of the last to get the makeup done. Yoochun had smiled at him gratefully though, so that was still worth it.

“Ah, Hyung, his forehead is too big, you won’t have enough BB Cream to cover it. Let’s skip his forehead.” Junsu said disapprovingly, surveying his favourite familiar forehead.

“Okay!” Jaejoong agreed, glad he saved his BB Cream. “What should I do next?”

“Liner! Liner! How many times have I said it Jaejoong ah.” Yunho said, almost sleepily as his head began to rest gently on Yoochun’s shoulder.

“Okay! Ja..” Jaejoong took out his eyeliner. “Yah this is expensive, appreciate that Hyung is willing to use it on you.” Jaejoong smiled at his dongsaeng who now looked like he suntanned only his forehead.

“Hyung let me do it! I’m good with eyeliners!” Junsu abandoned his now red foundation brush and grabbed the eyeliner, trying to focus. Why was the world slightly tilted when all he had was orange juice?

“Yah, stop moving!” Junsu grabbed Yoochun’s face and started drawing, his face scrunched up in the utmost concentration.

“Yah, aren’t you supposed to draw on the top part and not the bottom?” Yunho asked, his eyes half-closed by this point.

“Nono, they drew on the bottom for my solo as well.” Junsu said confidently, as he continued his mission of unconsciously turning Yoochun into a panda.

“Ja, all done!” Junsu said approvingly, admiring his work. The other three took a look and there was a moment of silence.

“Moving on.” Jaejoong took out his blusher. “We’re gonna turn our Yoochunnie into a cute little boy, aren’t we now?”

Changmin asked, pouting, “Hyung, hyung, can I do that?” Jaejoong blinked at the aegyo he hadn’t seen in three years. “Of course!” He pushed his blusher and brushes at his cute maknae.

Changmin switched places with Jaejoong, so that now Jaejoong held down a Yoochun who was, by this point, only concerned with his fast-diminishing soju in his bottle.

Changmin giggled as Junsu sleepily chanted by his ear, “more, more, okay! Well done Changmin. That looks fabulous mmm.” Jaejoong gave Changmin a sleepy thumbs up as his head gently slumped onto Yoochun’s other shoulder. Yunho was already snoring, his mouth wide open, his eyes in that horrible open fashion that Changmin now had to take responsibility to cover every time they got on a plane. Damn he really had to do a lot more now that the other three don’t take the plane with them anymore.

“Lipstick now.” Changmin said, searching for one. His eyes were drooping as well, it was starting to be a struggle to stay awake.

“What colour do you want, Yoochun?” Changmin asked. He looked up, and saw Yoochun’s head resting on Yunho’s, sound asleep in that ridiculous makeup.

“Junsu hyung, which should I use?” Changmin turned to Junsu beside him, and saw his head resting on the sofa leg, evidently also fast asleep.

“Weaklings.” Changmin muttered sleepily, as he randomly selected a bright red one. He coloured a heart shape on his hyung’s lips, and, satisfied with his work, he snuggled next to Junsu, head resting on his shoulder, glad that he could finally do that again, after such a long time.

——-

A few hours later, Yoochun woke up, craving for water to quench his thirst. He felt two heavy lumps on his shoulders and realised those were his hyungs. Gently, as he got up, he lowered their heads onto a pillow. Satisfied that he didn’t disturb his hyungs, he went to the kitchen to grab a glass of water.

And almost choked when he saw his reflection in the pots and pans on the stove.

Yoochun took a closer look, his head still groggy but nevertheless still aware that this required a payback of some kind. What should he do?

Finishing his water, he walked back and surveyed the battlefield. Empty bottles, bags of chips, makeup. Ah ha! Yoochun cheered silently as he spotted the eyeliners. I’ll just draw flower petals on their lower eyelids and make them look like girls!

Yoochun couldn’t be bothered with doing the whole makeup for each of his members because, let’s face it, there were four of them and it is almost 4 in the morning and wasn’t sleep much more important? And anyway, flower petal eyeliners were powerful enough to transform his members into girls. That was good enough.

And so, Yoochun used his remaining strength to finish the job. Once done and satisfied that they now looked like him, Yoochun slumped down onto the sofa, glad that he could once again fall asleep to the gentle breathing that he knew so well.

——-

“ARGH” Yoochun was rudely awoken by Junsu’s noise hours later.

“W-wha-” Confused, he sat up, trying to open his eyes.

Junsu was holding a mirror to his face, his expression horrified at Yoochun’s fabulous work.

“Ungh.” Yunho rolled and grabbed the nearest thing he could -Jaejoong’s arm- and covered his head, trying to block out that annoying dolphin noise.

Changmin had already gotten up and settled in on the other part of Jaejoong’s sofa, his back facing them.

Jaejoong opened an eye, realised his arm was being used as a pillow, snatched it back and sat up.

“Oh hey, that’s kinda pretty!” Jaejoong commented, yawning and stretching as he looked at Junsu. He turned to Yunho and peered groggily, “Yah, this is a work of art. Who did this?”

Yoochun had lied back down on the sofa again. “Me.” He half raised his hand, yawning as well.

Junsu pouted, continuing to survey himself in the mirror. “Well, I guess this is kinda..”

“You should totally use this for your solo, Jaejoong hyung.” Changmin sniggered as he peered blearily at his hyungs from where he was. Might as well wake up, from all the commotion that was going on.

Jaejoong took the mirror and looked at himself. “Yahh I might actually use it. What do you think, Yunho?”

Yunho half opened an eye, took a look at Jaejoong’s arm, gave the thumbs up, and went back to his sleep.

“Yah, that’s it then, thanks for the idea Yoochun!” Jaejoong said, high-fiving Yoochun who smiled back.

“I think it’s prettier on Changmin though.” Junsu said, shrugging.

Changmin looked up in shock.

“I NOW LOOK LIKE A GIRL TOO?!”

——-

“Lace eyelashes? Wow I never knew such things existed! Sure let’s go for that! That’s pretty close to what I want!”

“Okay Jaejoong, whatever you say. It’s your comeback. Don’t regret it.”

“I’m sure this will be daebak Manager-hyung. I’m pretty damn sure it’ll be great.”

Teary Eyes

“Hello?” Tired, but happy at the phone call.

“Y-yoochun H-hyung..” sniffling.

“Changmin ah? You okay? What’s wrong?” Alarmed, worried.

“I.. I..” Sound of nose blowing into tissue.

“What’s wrong? You’re starting to scare me now Changmin ah.” Grips phone tighter, imagining the worst.

“It’s.. I miss you..”

“What?” Relieved laughter. “You don’t have to cry just because you miss me, you sillly.”

More sniffling.

“Your teary eyes..” slight hiccuping from crying.

“What? Are you okay, Changmin? I’m not teary at all now.” Worried.

“I Miss You!! Your teary eyes!!” Insistent, almost impatient, frustrated.

“Wait what? You miss my teary eyes?” Surprised and worried for the mental health of his dongsaeng.

“How can you do this to me??” very confused.

Sound of scuffling.

“Hey, Yoochun ah, Yunho here.” Resigned.

“Hyung, what’s up with Changmin?” Very concerned.

“He’s just crying.” Like this happens everyday.

“Why??” alarmed.

“Oh, because of your drama, didn’t he say? He’s not really in his right mind now. Your drama is really strong, and you know how Changmin is with sad dramas.”

“Ah..” Not sure how to respond.

In the background, sound of Changmin sobbing into his pillow, “I HATE YOU HYUNG I HATE YOU WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO SUYEON?!”

Bokutachiwa Tohoshinki desu!

Jaejoong’s mood was slightly dampened these few days. The hacker, or hackers maybe, he doesn’t know, that were haunting him since almost the beginning of his Twitter life, went too far this time. Sure, he could handle the occasional DMs telling him to die, but this time, to actually make a public tweet! He thought unfollowing everyone except his members would solve the problem but evidently not.

And so, when he woke up from his nap to texts from his managers telling him about his Twitter, in his groggy, flu-fogged mind, Jaejoong decided it would be best to delete it now before anything else happens, especially when he himself was too weak to do anything at the moment.

Jaejoong saved a DM in his Twitter, “This ends now.”, knowing full well the hackers could see it even as he typed.

And then, he deleted it. mjjeje was no more.

——-

And so, with no Twitter to distract him, Jaejoong has gotten decidedly more bored than ever. Sure, he has that movie to promote. But compared to what he had gone through back in the DBSK days, this was nothing. Thanks to SME, he now has a high endurance level for fatigue. Thanks to SME, a normal level of activities was actually now too little and even empty for him.

Jaejoong went online to search about Yunho and Changmin’s Catch Me activities. They were preparing for their Catch Me concert in Seoul. Jaejoong looked wistfully at all the articles and comments about the concert.

DBSK’s comeback after 4 years.

DBSK is back!!

So excited! OMG FINALLY THE KINGS HAVE RETURNED TO KOREA!!

Jaejoong felt weird, seeing his group name yet feeling so detached to it. His sweat and tears for 7 years is now something separated from him. Jaejoong’s mood got decidedly worse. He closed the window in his laptop and flopped on his bed, arms spread wide. He has a fanmeet in Osaka in the next few days and was apprehensive at his command of Japanese these days. Thinking about the difficulties they faced in doing any activities in Japan made his mood drop further.

He stared at the ceiling, blew at his fringe.

Should I cut it for the fanmeet?

Suddenly, Jaejoong’s phone rang. He reached out for it and answered.

“Hello?”

“Jaejoongie! What are you doing now?”

“Ah, Yunho-yah. Nothing much..”

Yunho sounded breathless. Jaejoong knew, they were probably in the midst of rehearsing for the Catch Me Concert. Thinking about the articles he read, his mood worsened.

“What’s wrong, Jaejoong ah?” Jaejoong could hear Changmin’s hysterical laughter in the background, mingled with those of the staff, he assumed. Ah, so familiar, yet so foreign..

“Hello? Jaejoongie? You still there?”

“Ah, y-yeah. I’m here. Just worried about my Japanese skills. You know, seeing as how we haven’t gone there for activities for so long..” Jaejoong half-lied, trying to brighten his voice so that he won’t affect Yunho’s Fighting spirit which he obviously has now. How can they not be pumped up at their first concert in Korea in 4 years?

Yunho laughed, “Yah, pabo-yah, is that it? Don’t you have loads of Japanese friends? It can’t have deteriorated so much, right?”

Jaejoong gave a half-hearted laugh, “Yeah..”

A pause.

“Come on, out with it. I’ve known you for 11 years Jaejoong ah. I know something’s bothering you.”

Jaejoong’s laugh this time was genuine. “I just.. don’t feel like I’m part of.. DBSK anymore..”

Jaejoong could hear Yunho’s breathing slow down. He probably went to sit down in a corner somewhere.

“Yah, you know you’re always part of us, no matter where you are or what you do. Don’t ever doubt that.”

“Yeah.. but..” Jaejoong rubbed his eyes, trying to fight the ache in his heart as he wished so bad to be rehearsing for the concert with them.

“You know, we have been protecting your place here. We’re gonna use our original five voice music for the concert.”

Jaejoong blinked. “Really? They allowed it?”

“Yeah, they thought it’ll lessen the backlash from performing our old songs as a duo.” Yunho said, somewhat sadly.

“So don’t worry, even if you’re not here, your voices are!” Jaejoong could tell Yunho was trying hard to brighten his mood. That’s how they always worked. Complete opposites, if one was down, the other was up and will try to bring the other up with him.

Nothing’s really changed after all.

“Don’t you have a fanmeet in Osaka in a few days?” Yunho piped, breaking into Jaejoong’s thoughts.

“Wha- Yeah, how did you know?”

“Yah, I’m the leader and you guys are my members. How can I not know?” Yunho chided playfully.

Jaejoong laughed, “Yeah, the three of us are so screwed. We’re gonna use Korean to save ourselves the embarrassment of displaying our horrible Japanese.”

“What?” Yunho exclaimed mockingly. “No, as the leader, I insist you at least introduce yourselves in Japanese! Repeat after me! Bokutachiwa Tohoshinki desu!”

Jaejoong laughed.

“Repeat!! Bokutachiwa Tohoshinki desu!”

“Bokutachiwa Tohoshinki desu!”

Bokutachiwa Tohoshinki desu!!”

“Bokutachiwa Tohoshinki desu!!”

“Good, remember this always okay?”

“Yes, Leader-sshi.” Jaejoong replied, smiling. He did feel a lot better now.

From the background, Jaejoong suddenly heard, “Love you hyung! Miss.. HITTING YOU!” accompanied by evil laughter that still sent chills down his spine.

“Yah yah, Yunho pass the phone to Changmin- Changmin ah-“

“Oops sorry, got to go, we have to start practising again!” Yunho said gleefully. “Talk to you later, bye~!”

——-

Bokutachiwa Toho-uhm JYJ..”

Damn it Yunho, this is your fault.

The Best Times

A white-haired man was sitting leisurely, flipping through the pages of a yellowed photo album. It was filled with fading photos, newspaper clippings, magazine interviews, all with one commonality; they were lit up by five boys with their brilliant smiles, reminiscent of a childhood most could only dream about. The old man sighed as he closed the album for the n-th time. He slowly got up and was almost knocked over by a very energetic 5 year old boy.

“Grandpa! Grandpa! I’m here!” The boy squealed, as he squeezed himself into the arms of the old man.

“Ah, my boy, hello!” The old man smiled as he sat down again, ruffling the young one’s hair affectionately.

“What are you doing, grandpa?” The boy spotted the photo album lying beside them. His hands reached out for it in curiosity.

“Ah, this is a photo album of many years ago..” The old man smiled as he flipped it open again. Finally, he will show his grandson what he has been wanting to show ever since the child was born.

“This here, is Dong Bang Shin Ki..” The old man pointed to the first photo, where five boys posed, their eyes glinting with hope and apprehension at their future.

“Who’s that?” The boy pointed with his chubby fingers at one of the five boys in the first photo. The figure had a grin that bordered on arrogance, masking whatever hardships and nervousness they were going through. His short, reddish hair shone in the sunlight coming from behind them.

“Ah, that boy, he goes by the name of Micky Yoochun.” The old man smiled, trying to fight the ache in his heart that comes whenever he remembers.

“He was a very kind, very gentle man, with a great sense of musicality. He composed many songs for Dong Bang Shin Ki, and acted in many successful dramas.” The old man’s mind flashed back to the past.

“He was always someone you could rely on, someone that puts on a mask just so he doesn’t let his sadness affect those around him. You can’t tell from here can you? He was actually going through a lot in his personal life when this picture was taken.”

The boy looked at the Yoochun in the picture in scrutiny, trying to sense any hardship that his grandfather was talking about. “He looks like a rich kid.”

The old man laughed. “Yeah, he gets that a lot. The reality was far from it.”

“He must have been a very strong person then, grandpa.” The boy said thoughtfully, feeling a sense of awe for this person he has never met.

The old man nodded.

“This here, is Xiah Junsu.” He points to the boy next to Yoochun. His hair was longish, with blonde highlights, his expression vague. “He was trying to express his charisma here but he failed miserably, didn’t he?”

The boy looked at where his grandfather was pointing, and nodded. “He must have been a weird person.”

The old man laughed. “Indeed, one of the weirdest people ever. But his voice is so angelic, you’d never think his personality was like that. He always raised the energy level in the room. Wherever he goes, he’ll always break into random singing. It could get annoying at times, but what I’d do to hear that randomness again.” The old man’s head echoed with that angelic voice. “Remind me to let you listen to one of his solos.”

“Okay.” The boy said absent-mindedly as he scrutinised the person on the other side of Yoochun.

“This person looks weird too.” This person had on a fingerless glove, with his index pointing at his head as though he thought it looked very suave. The old man chuckled. “Ah that’s Hero Jaejoong, another gifted singer. He may look weak here but he’s actually really strong. His punches can really hurt.”

“He hits people?” The boy said, surprised and in slight horror.

The old man ruffled the boy’s hair again and said, “Yes, but he is probably one of the kindest people you can ever meet. He’s always the one making sure the group remains in contact. Even when the group split up for a brief while back then, he was always the one making the most effort to bring them back together.” The old man took a deep breath, trying not to let his heart break again. “And, he was also an excellent cook.” He added, trying to lighten his own mood.

The boy wrinkled his nose. “He looks like a girl.”

The old man laughed. “Yeah he gets that a lot too.”

“Who is this then?” The boy pointed at the figure on the far right. He also wore a fingerless glove, but with two fingers pointing at his head. He looked confident, and a sense of reliability emitted from him.

“Ah that’s Uknow Yunho, the leader of the group. The one that probably had to deal with the most negativity when the group went through its troubled times.” The old man blinked away his tears, as he remembered the split. “Even then, he always remained strong for whoever was left. He never liked to show his weaknesses to anyone. It was rare to see him cry. It would be nice if he depended on people around him a bit more.”

The boy looked at Yunho in wonder. “I like him.”

“He would have been glad to meet you too, my boy.” The old man replied, his heart aching with what could have been.

“And this here,” the boy pointed in excitement at the last figure. “This here is you right, grandpa?”

“Yup, you’re so clever.” The boy beamed as he looked back at his grandfather’s younger self.

“I was called, Choikang Changmin. Back then it sounded so weird. We were the first group with four syllable names.” Changmin smiled as he looked at himself. The awkward hand waving, accompanied by an awkward smile. He didn’t know what he was doing back then, nor why he was doing it.

“I’d probably quit a lot sooner if it weren’t for these four people.” Changmin mused, as the boy compared his grandfather to the boy in the photo.

“I didn’t know anything at all. These people were the only ones I saw everyday back then. It got annoying sometimes.” Changmin smiled, wishing he could turn back time.

“Where are they all now?” the boy asked, looking at his grandfather.

“Well, they have all gone to a better place, where I’ll be meeting them soon. It’ll probably still be a while, but we’ll see each other again. We’ve been separated before, so this isn’t too bad.” Changmin’s thoughts went back to the TVXQ days. Now, it feels like he was reliving the split. Except that this time, he was truly alone. His reliable hyungs are no longer a phone call away. Even though Changmin is resigned to this part of life, he’d give anything just to spend a normal day with the four of them, in the old dorm, fighting over the most mundane things. Yoochun bullying Junsu, Jaejoong in the kitchen cooking, Yunho on the sofa reading..

His grandson’s high pitched voice broke into his thoughts again.

“What were you all doing in the photo?”

Changmin smiled. “We were promoting our first ever album when this photo was taken. I had to kiss a kitten.” The boy wrinkled his nose in disgust. “Yes, thank you for understanding!” Changmin laughed as his grandson patted his arm in sympathy. “It was probably one of the darkest points of our debut.”

“You looked like you had fun though.” The boy said as he flipped a few pages.

“I did. We went through a lot of hard times but we always ended up happy. Well, most of the time anyway.” Changmin amended as he remembered the fights they used to have. Fights between Yunho and Jaejoong that would leave Junsu crying and him scared witless, Yoochun stunned into silence. “But it was still good overall. Especially when we got back together after the split.” Changmin flipped to the second half of the album.

His grandson looked at the details in awe. “Can you still remember all of it, grandpa?”

Changmin paused.

“It was, and still is, the best part of my life. And I will never, ever, forget it.”

Catch Me

Jaejoong couldn’t believe that, on this long-awaited day, he just had to be stuck in a traffic jam. He was in his car, the windows tinted, excited by today’s plans yet annoyed at the situation he was in. He let out a sigh as he glanced at the clock in his car. Traffic has been stationary for the past 10 minutes. He was bored.

He looked at the sleek yellow car in front of him and took out his phone.

“Junsu yah, what’s happening in front?”

“I don’t know, there might have been a small accident in front. I can’t really see.”

“Why must this happen today of all days?” Jaejoong sulked as he tried to see Junsu’s head through the tinted windows of the yellow car.

“I know. Ah- I think we’re moving! See you later!”

20 minutes later, they were at a standstill again.

Jaejoong took out his phone and surfed the internet while waiting. There wasn’t much today. The number 1 search topic on the search sites was what he was gonna do at the secret location today with his four brothers today, so he forced himself to do something else. Ah.. it was boring waiting in the car alone.

“Junsu yah ^^” Jaejoong tweeted to Junsu.

“Hyung~ What’s up! ^^” Came the reply.

“Because I miss you~ ke”. He replied, smiling.

“You’re now just behind me though… ^^;;”

Kekekeke rather than the back of your head, I miss your face.” Jaejoong replied. It’s been so long since they last met up, what with the fanmeets and Junsu’s world tour. Jaejoong really wished the traffic would clear up soon.

I wanted to try turning around…but suddenly became shy…;; hehe” Junsu replied. Jaejoong can see Junsu laughing to himself in his car.

So you’re like this ~ ke” Jaejoong couldn’t help but chuckle at how cute his dongsaeng still is.

Heu heu heu!.”

A text came. “Hyung we’re finally moving!”

Jaejoong sighed in relief. Finally, they were meeting at last.

——-

“CHANGMIN AH!!!!!!” Junsu burst through the doorway and collapsed on a very bewildered-looking Changmin.

“GETOFF-“

“Jaejoongie, finally you’re here!” Yunho engulfed his long time friend and laughed in relief.

“Yunho yaaaah! It’s been a long time! Woah you both got the same hair!” Jaejoong blinked in surprise as he took a good look at his other half.

“Oh yeah, we just came from a photoshoot.” Yunho shrugged as he went back to the laptop he was working on. “Come, sit here.” He patted the chair that was next to his. Changmin was still trying to push Junsu off from him on the sofa. Jaejoong tried to ignore that ache as he realised again how separate their lives had become. They had been so united once, going everywhere together. Knowing everything about each other to the point of suffocation almost. And yet now, look at them. He didn’t even know his two friends got a haircut

No, today is a good day. Today WILL be a good day.

“Where’s.. Yoochun.. hyung..?” Changmin panted as he finally managed to kick Junsu to the floor. Junsu stuck his tongue out at his maknae and took out his phone.

“He just texted me. He went to get food so he’ll be here in 10 minutes.” Junsu read off. He switched his phone off and finally looked around the place. “Wow, nice place. Whose is it?”

“My friend’s. He said he’ll lend it to us for today.” Changmin nodded his head to the photo frame on the table.

“You have friends?!” Junsu asked incredulously.

“Says the one with a PC bang in his house.” Changmin shot back.

“YAH I-“

Dingdong.

Changmin smirked as he got up to open the door. He looked through the peephole and felt a sense of uneasiness. Who was that? Did they find out?

The guy at the door had on a black beanie and a hoodie. His beard covered his whole jawline, and his hoodie was full of holes. He had a cup in his hand too. Was he looking for a refill? Even stranger was the fact that his back was facing the door. Was he a hobo?

“What’s up?” Sensing the uneasiness of his maknae, Junsu got up too. Jaejoong and Yunho followed, and all three fought to look through the peephole first.

“Who’s that person out there? Is he a hobo?” Changmin muttered uncertainly as he stepped aside for the ensuing tussle.

“Yah you always got to look through it first when we were living at the dorm!” Junsu complained as Jaejoong won the struggle of the peephole.

Jaejoong burst out laughing as he opened the door. “Yah, it’s Yoochun ah! Changmin ah don’t you recognise him anymore?”

Yoochun stepped in and took off his fake beard. “Annyeong!” Yoochun greeted them all with a smile as he closed the door behind him.

Changmin tried not to give in to his shock as he realised he had forgotten how his hyung looked like in person. Yunho read the look in Changmin’s eyes and patted him sympathetically on the back before returning to the laptop.

Have I really forgotten them?

Yoochun gave Changmin a big hug and a bag of crisps. “You still like these right?”

“He should, after the way he fought all of us for that last bag that one time in the dorm.” Jaejoong smiled.

“Ah.. Yeah I do.” Changmin nodded, ignoring Yunho’s pointed look. He had sworn off them after nearing choking on them a few months back.

Yoochun grinned and pulled him to the sofa. “Our Changmin looks so expensive today!”

“Our Yoochun looks like a beggar today!” Junsu piped in.

“Yah yah, this is fashion! You still look to the mannequins for fashion advice, what would you know?”

“Shut up everyone. I didn’t go through all the trouble to get the video before its release date just to hear you all squabbling you know.” Yunho interrupted, grinning as he turned the laptop so they could all see.

Jaejoong took a deep breath. Another music video without all five of them. He would have been in it if he stayed.

It started.

“Wow.” The three of them said as they wondered how much time and effort they would have put if they had stayed. This.. were they also supposed to do this too?

“It’s a hulk dance.” Yunho said, beaming as he noticed the expressions on the others’ faces.

“Well, what do you think?” Changmin asked as he stretched out on the sofa once the video ended.

“It’s.. really really good. I’m proud of you guys.” Jaejoong said softly, as he realised again how separated they have all become. This was so different to the Jaechun subunit era. Back then, there was always this unity when they showed Yunho, Changmin and Junsu their duet music video. They were always so conscious of the image of the 5 of them as a whole. This time, there was no sense of connection at all. This video was specifically for just Changmin and Yunho.

It was like looking at them through the eyes of an outsider now.

Yunho grinned, “Thanks! We worked really hard on it. Can’t wait for our comeback!”

“Can’t wait for our comeback! I starved off rice for this so it better be perfect!”

Got it hyung! Changmin ah smile more in the performances! You look too much like an old man!”

“Cant wait for our comeback!”

“This is the weirdest hair ever hyung. I can’t see properly!”

“Can’t wait for our comeback!”

“I don’t want to dance anymore~~~I’m so tired!”

Junsu smiled despite the ache inside as all those memories flooded back. “Yeah. Hwaiting hyung, I’ll watch it well.”

Yunho blinked as he realised the oddness of the reply this time too.

“You can come back you know.” Yunho said softly. “We’ve been protecting your places ever since our first stage as a duo.”

“Yeah, they wanted to add new members.” Changmin added, his hands curling into fists against his will as he tried not to let the anger of such a thought overcome him.

“We won’t let them though. Even though you only see the two of us in the video, you’ll see five members on our performances. I’ll try my best to make it so.” Yunho said confidently as he thought of the plan he’s been trying to push for the comeback. He must remember to remind them to watch those performances.

“By the way hyung, where’s the food?”

——-

Yoochun blinked as he realised that yes, the food he went to buy was not there.

“AH! I LEFT THEM SOMEWHERE BUT I FORGOT WHERE.” Yoochun jumped up in a slight panic. “Shit we need to find them I labelled them with our initials since the boxes weren’t transparent-“

“What? Where did you go today?” Yunho was worried. They mustn’t leave any traces behind. If they found out that they met up to show them the video, he would be dead.

“I bought the food.. then I went to the park near here to rest! AH I think I left it somewhere there!”

“Okay, let’s go.” Jaejoong said, standing up straightaway. “Put on your disguises!”

And so, the five of them set off, on a trip they haven’t done for a long time.

——-

“Shit, the five of us walking together would blow our cover. We have to split up.” Jaejoong whispered urgently as he started to feel people stare.

“Okay, the park isn’t too big, we’ll split up. Whoever finds it call the others.” Yunho whispered back.

“Ah we left our phones back there though!” Changmin pointed out, frowning as he remembered how he was worried his and Yunho’s phones were bugged. Ah.. they should have brought them with them anyway. How were they going to call each other now?

“It’s okay.” Yoochun whispered. “Whoever finds it first sing your comeback song line. Baby catch me catch me catch me girl tonight wasn’t it? That way we can help you promote the song too!”

“Great idea!” Junsu slapped Yoochun on the back. “Let’s go!”

——-

20 minutes later, they heard Yoochun’s voice. “Baby catch me catch me catch me girl tonight!” The other four hurried to his voice and found him beaming with.. 4 boxes of lunch.

“I thought you bought for all of us? Why are there only 4 boxes?” Changmin asked, puzzled.

A look came on Yoochun’s face as he suddenly remembered.

“Ahh.. That..”

Junsu walked over and checked the initials on the boxes. He burst out laughing, “Yahh, you ate Changmin’s lunch? You want to die?”

“WHAT?” Changmin shouted as he made for his hyung’s neck.

BABY CATCH ME CATCH ME CATCH ME GIRL TONIGHT!!” Yoochun yelled at the top of his lungs as he ran away, laughing at his maknae’s outrage and scaring some old people nearby. People stared as they watched two very strange, very hairy men running, with the chased singing and calling the chaser a girl when he very obviously is not. There are more and more strange people nowadays.

Jaejoong, Junsu and Yunho bowed over in laughter as they watched the chase. Ah, it felt like they were on their nighttime strolls that they had back then.

“Bet Changmin wished his ‘arm’ in the hulk dance was real now.” Junsu sniggered.
