"Ah Yunho yah, what’s up?"
"Nothing much. Just pretty bored these days. Wanna hang out?"
"Sure, my place at 8pm? I could cook dinner."
"Mm, see you then."
Yunho had been feeling restless these days. His schedule was noticeably a lot emptier than it had ever been, especially after completing the recent rounds of concerts. This.. freedom that he gets now, both because he’s a senior in the industry now, and also because he’s preparing for his impending enlistment, feels very alien, and he wonders why his three brothers would ever want to have such freedom.
Then again, Yunho knew he was a workaholic himself. Changmin had his variety shows these days, leaving him to spend their days off (well, his days off) alone. So Yunho had revisited his old friendships, attended weddings which he might have otherwise gave a miss, and caught up with those people he had unintentionally neglected due to his past lack of time. Hiking, going to cafes.. really, Yunho didn’t know what else he could do to kill the time. He was quite simply just waiting for his next drama to start filming.
Yunho had woken up late today since it was yet again another day off. It felt strange to wake up on his own naturally now. No alarms, no managers to shake him awake. No grumpy Changmin to face in the mornings either. Yunho had to admit, he felt pretty lonely these days. His friends all worked during the day (Changmin as well, of course) and so he had no one in Seoul to hang out with during the day. Even Junsu was in Japan, and Yoochun was filming his movie. Thankfully, Jaejoong was free today, though a little later than he’d like. Well, Jaejoong was preparing his solo album after all. It couldn’t be helped.
Munching his breakfast/lunch of rice and kimchi, he decided to head over to the SME building to see if his juniors were doing well or not. That was his duty at the very least, as a senior in the company. SHINee was making their comeback soon, and EXO soon after. Surely they could use a senior’s advice today?
It was 4pm when Yunho finally arrived at the SME building (because he once again couldn’t find the keys to his car but that’s okay, at least he was spending his time moving).
"Oh, Yunho yah, what brings you here today? It’s your day off isn’t it?" The receptionist at the SME building greeted him in surprise when he walked in.
"Ah, yeah, I thought I’d just help out with the juniors for a bit since I’m free.."
"Ah, that’s really nice of you." The receptionist smiled a knowing smile as he walked past.
Everyone looked in surprise as Yunho walked into the training room. The trainees immediately bowed, both excited and scared that suddenly, the great Yunho-nim is here.
"Yunho yah, why are you here?" The teacher asked as he signalled for the trainees to take a break.
"I just thought I’d help out since I’m free for the day." Yunho smiled. In the corner of his eye, he could see the group of female trainees trying to contain their excitement while sneaking glances at him.
"Ah, well.. Alright, I could use a little help." The teacher smiled wryly, hoping the presence of Yunho would be helpful rather than distracting.
3 hours later, Yunho realised that some of the trainees were deliberately making mistakes in the hopes he’ll talk to them by pointing out their mistakes. He could tell that the teacher too, was thinking there wasn’t much progress to be made as long as Yunho was here.
"I have to go guys." Yunho announced, after one of the female trainees made the same mistake in her footwork the third time in a row. Seeing the slight relief in the teacher’s face, and the crestfallen looks of the girls, Yunho grinned, "Do well, kids!"
As he walked out of the building, he spotted a few sasaengs waiting with their DSLRs poised at the ready. If only they knew who I’m meeting now.
Yunho kept his gaze down as a member of the staff came out to act as bodyguard to his car. Yunho was afraid he’d let out a smile just at the thought of meeting his best friend tonight.
"Oh Yunho yah, welcome!" Jaejoong greeted his best friend happily when he opened the door. Jaejoong had been in the studio all day working on his album, and it felt good to finally chill with Yunho after a long day.
"Ah, by the way, I’m inviting 2 friends as well. You’d like them."
"Oh sure, okay." Yunho said as he plunked himself on Jaejoong’s nice, black leather sofa. He stretched out his long limbs while Jaejoong busied himself in his fancy kitchen.
This feels nice. Feels like we’re back in the past again.
Jaejoong called back to Yunho as he added vegetables to his kimchi jigae, “What have you been doing today?”
"Just tried to help out with the trainees today."
Jaejoong snorted. “Well that’s helpful.” He snuck a glance back at Yunho and got a mehrong in return. Jaejoong chuckled to himself. His Yunho, still as childish as ever.
10 minutes later, the doorbell rang. “Hyung, noona, welcome!” Jaejoong greeted as he let a tall, RnB styled guy and a charismatic lady in. Yunho liked them immediately. The new arrivals’ faces turned into a look of surprise when they realised who else was in the apartment.
"Woah. Woah woah woah. You guys are still friends?" The guy, Jo Sungmin asked as he shook hands with Yunho.
"Well, we’ve never said we stopped being friends." Yunho smiled. As they settled around the dining table, Jaejoong opened his bottles of wine. It was almost automatic for Yunho to pour the wine after Jaejoong opened the bottles.
Some habits die hard after all.
"Mann this jigae is delicious!" Noona exclaimed as she sipped spoonful after spoonful.
"Yeah, that’s because my members suck so much at cooking I always had to be the cook in the house." Jaejoong teased as Yunho grinned sheepishly. "I can cook seafood ramen now at least!” He said defensively. “You saw, didn’t you?”
Jaejoong laughed, “Yeah, yeah, using a toothpick to pick out the guts of the shrimp was impressive.”
"A toothpick?" Sungmin blinked, "Don’t people usually use a kni-"
"Ssh it’s okay. That’s because it’s Yunho. He thinks ramen is real cooking." Jaejoong said in a loud whisper, grinning at his best friend. Yunho started, "Well it’s still food and.."
The hours passed by pleasantly, with the four falling into comfortable chatter.
"Ah, how’s your album coming along Jaejoongie?" Yunho asked, sipping his wine.
"Oh play it for us!" Sungmin said. "Give me an exclusive preview of one of your songs!" He got out his phone in expectation. Jaejoong got up and stretched. "Alright, I’ll play a short part on the piano."
"Yahh Jaejoongie!" Yunho exclaimed in appreciation as Jaejoong did exaggerated stretches of his hands while he settled by the piano. Noona cheered in excitement. Jaejoong grinned. He started gently, playing a sweet, soft melody on the piano.
Sungmin looked through his phone camera and remarked, “This kinda makes listeners sleepy.”
"Somehow, I just hear Kajima kajima in this melody. Everyone keeps singing that part.” Yunho laughed. He remembers how he and Changmin would use that part of their brothers’ song to tease the dancers whenever they wanted to take a break. Whenever Yunho thought of JYJ, that’s the one part of their songs that will always come to mind.
Maybe it’s because, even now, even after seeing how much happier his brothers are..
He never wanted them to leave.
Yunho was brought back to the present by Sungmin’s impressed voice, “Yahh first preview of Jaejoong’s new album! The fans will like this!”
"Wait hyung, you’re posting it?" Jaejoong asked, slightly alarmed.
"Yeah on my Instagram. Come on, it’ll be good publicity!" Sungmin said, trying to reassure the now concerned Jaejoong.
"It’s not that, it’s just. Wait, let me hear it."
Jaejoong played the now posted video on Sungmin’s Instagram. Ah, Yunho’s voice can be heard.
"I’m sorry hyung, can you delete it please? Yunho’s voice can be heard.. I don’t want to get him into trouble."
"Yah pabo-yah, they’re no longer in the same group." Noona chided him, taking the phone from him. With quick taps, the video was soon deleted.
"Ah." The realisation finally dawned on him.
"I’m sorry guys." He knew, even if it was deleted, fans would have had it downloaded already. It was too late.
"It’s okay." Yunho said cheerfully, "A rare treat for the fans, no? It’s what we idols are supposed to do anyway."
Jaejoong looked at Yunho and sighed, smiling weakly. Trust Yunho to talk about his job even on his days off.
"You have an occupation disease my friend." Jaejoong said as he ruffled Yunho’s hair and took his seat next to him.
"I don’t really have much time left anyway do I?" Yunho tried to keep the cheerfulness in his voice while fighting the sadness at the impending end.
"Yes you do. You’ll join us when the contract expires, and then we’ll be together again." Jaejoong insisted determinedly, patting his friend’s hands.
"Yeah, you’ll have my support!" Noona agreed, beaming.
"Of course, who would say no to the return of the greatest boyband since H.O.T?" Sungmin added. "Do me a favor, don’t go again after you come back, okay? Kajima!"
Yunho and Jaejoong laughed.
Yes, TVXQ, will be back again, whole.
